Calacatta Marble Tiles FAQ
What are Calacatta marble tiles?
Calacatta marble tiles are cut from Calacatta marble, a premium natural stone quarried in Carrara, Italy. They’re distinguished by a bright white base with thick, sweeping veins in warm gold and grey, making them bolder and more dramatic than other Italian marbles.
What’s the difference between Calacatta and Carrara marble tiles?
Both come from the same region of Italy, but Calacatta marble tiles have a whiter background with fewer, more pronounced veins. Carrara tiles tend to be slightly greyer with finer, more uniform veining. Calacatta is generally considered the rarer and more luxurious of the two.
Where can I use Calacatta marble tiles?
They’re a popular choice for bathroom walls and floors, kitchen backsplashes, shower surrounds and feature walls. They also work beautifully as fireplace surrounds and in hallways.
Do Calacatta marble tiles need sealing?
Yes. Like all natural marble, Calacatta tiles are porous and should be sealed before use and resealed periodically to protect against staining and moisture damage.
Are Calacatta marble tiles hard to maintain?
They require a bit more care than porcelain or ceramic so make sure you avoid acidic cleaners and wipe up spills promptly. With proper sealing and regular cleaning using a pH-neutral cleaner, they will look great for years.
Can I use Calacatta marble tiles on floors?
Absolutely. A honed or tumbled finish is recommended for floors as it provides better grip than a polished surface. Keep in mind that marble is softer than granite or porcelain, so it’s better suited to lower-traffic areas.
